Driving Tips

How would you describe today's driving environment?
How about hectic, crazy, discourteous, frustrating, frightening, dangerous, intense — these are just a few thoughts that come to mind.

The prolific growth of the number of vehicles in use today, combined with inadequate and deteriorating road conditions, has dramatically escalated the level of driver aggressiveness. The term "road rage" did not exist a few years ago. Various weather conditions such as snow, ice, rain, wind, and hail increase the risks. Add to this phenomenon the attitude, lack of skill and competency of most drivers, and the conclusion is undeniable: driving today represents a rapidly increasing risk for all of us.

Not only is the risk of driving on the upswing, so are the costs to drivers and companies with fleet vehicles. Automobile crash rates are increasing, as are the costs for medical treatment, auto repair, and legal representation. As a result, automobile insurance premiums have steadily increased and are now among the biggest expenses for both a family and a company with fleet vehicles.

Motor vehicle crashes kill close to 42,000 people each year, most between the ages of 15 and 44.
More than 6,000 teens are killed in crashes each year.
Crashes are the number one cause of on-the-job fatalities.
The National Safety Council estimates that over 30% of all employee deaths are caused by crashes.
Each work-related employee fatality is estimated to cost the employer $110,500 in workers compensation alone, not including all the indirect costs associated with lost productivity.

Consumer buying practices provide the clearest evidence of the growing concern over driving safety. A few years ago, the selection of an automobile was heavily influenced by such factors as horsepower, style and amenities. Today, safety features have become a primary factor in the buying decision. One of the biggest problems is that most people have not had the opportunity to learn to use the safety features on their new cars (ABS, suspensions, traction control, etc.) The results are being interpreted to demonstrate that the new systems, such as ABS, don't work. And what do you think the public's perception of and desire for safety systems will be if the insurance industry promotes this.

The perception of driving safety has changed. Why? Because most people realize that they, and their families, are at risk! The real question is ... what do you think we should do about it? Should we demand a higher level of driver competency? Should we mandate better preparation for drivers? Or do we just continue as is?

We believe that it is very important for each family ... each person ... to consider what this means to them and what they are going to do about it! Yelling, screaming, and honking at another driver will get you into serious trouble - IF that is your only strategy.

We invite you to look through our Driving Tips section. You just might find something interesting of value for you and your family.
