Parent Coaching Kit
Lesson 5
practice routes
Lesson 5
Many parents just take their teen out for a drive without giving much thought or attention to specific things you want them to experience and learn from. It is a very good idea for the parent to put together practice routes that place the new teen driver in various situations and conditions. As they drive in these situations, they are learning to be aware of specific driving environments and what they need to be prepared to do. And they can become more confident and comfortable.
There are so many potential situations it will be impossible to cover all of them, but if you just visualize what you believe are the most important or the most dangerous, especially within your specific environment, defining good practice routes can become long term programming that will help your child in the future.
You are aware of these driving challenges and situations, so just plan a route that will give them an opportunity to learn what to do and what not to do.
