Lesson 1

Understanding Psychomotor Skills

Lesson 1

Most of us understand the basics of Skills – or what we refer to as Psychomotor Skills.  Psycho referring to the brain or mind.  Motor is the body.  A skill is the ability to do something at the subconscious level, without having to think about it.  It’s like learning to play a sport.

The only way that the brain learns to do something is by repetitions.  We have all heard “practice makes perfect”.  But that is not really accurate.  Perfect practice makes perfect.  If you practice mistakes, with repetitions of the mistakes, you are programming the mistakes.  If you are practicing the piano, and you repeat the mistakes enough times, you are programming the mistake.

This concept is very important in driving.  A vehicle moving at speed does NOT allow the driver to spend too much time thinking about how to respond to a crisis situation.  It has to be done in real-time, automatically.

Parents need to understand the importance of skills and how to train their teen in the skills of driving.
