learning stages
Lesson 9
Most of us are somewhat familiar with the stages of learning, which are:
- Unconscious Incompetence – We don’t know what we don’t know. And the problem is that we don’t even know that we don’t know.
- Conscious Incompetence – We now know and realize that we don’t know how to do something.
- Conscious Competence – We can now do something, but we have to do it at the conscious level by thinking about it.
- Unconscious Competence – We have now “programmed” into our brain the ability to do some things at the subconscious level. We don’t have to think about it. We can do some things automatically.
The stages of learning are very important for a new driver, but even more important for the coach because the coach needs to become aware of where the student IS in the process.
The objective of a coach is to help the student get as much to the subconscious level as quickly as possible. This requires lots of repetitions and practice, especially when the teen has a driving permit.
